Legal Requirements

How many first aiders do I need?

Employers are required by law to make an assessment of the work place. The table below, compiled using information from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), gives an indication of the number of First Aiders required in the work place

Risk Category Employees Requirement
Low Risk e.g.

Retail
Office
Library
Up to 50 At least 1 appointed person
50 – 100 At least 1 first aider
100+ 1 additional first aider per 100 employees
Medium Risk e.g.

Light Engineering
Assembly work
Food Processing Warehousing
Up to 20 At least 1 appointed person
20 – 100 At least 1 first aider per 50 employees
100+

1 additional first aider per 100 employees
High Risk e.g.

Construction Work
Chemical Work
Slaughter Houses
Working with
dangerous machinery or sharp instruments
Up to 5 At least 1 appointed person
5 – 50 At least 1 first aider
100+ 1 additional first aider per 50 employees

The numbers in the table are the minimum requirements. You will need extra First Aiders to take account of the following

Large Sites:

First Aiders should be in close proximity to all areas. They should be able to get to a casualty quickly.

Foreseeable absences:

Cover should remain at minimum level even when First Aiders are absent as a result of annual leave.

Isolated Work Locations:

You will need to consider provision in each area.

Shift work:

Every shift should be adequately covered.

Members of the public and contractors:

The HSE strongly recommends that you include non-employees visiting your premises in your first aid provision.

Any additional risks:

e.g. Working with hazardous substances, heavy loads, dangerous equipment or animals.
